This article presents a brief panorama of the emergence of the evaluation of policies, programs and public services, to frame it current situation and to refer which can be it development in the future. At present the evaluation is a wide professional field, predictably in expansion, not only in the area of social programs and services (education, health and social assistance), but in a very much major area of the public performances, for example in cultural programs, in programs with incentives to the creation of employment, or programs about protection of the environment, about immigration, about promotion of the industry and the trade, about rural development, about improvement of the infrastructures and the telecommunications, about linguistic diversity, etc. But, in contraposition to what it is in the habit of thinking, the professional of the evaluation not only needs to know a good handful of skills of social investigation, but he (she) must have many other skills and knowledges. In fact, throughout thirty years of experience in evaluation, evaluators have learned some important lessons that surely would continue being important in the future of this profession.

Este artículo presenta un breve panorama del surgimiento de la evaluación de políticas, programas y servicios públicos, para enmarcar su situación actual y para referirnos a cuál puede ser su desarrollo en un futuro. En la actualidad la evaluación es un amplio campo profesional, previsiblemente en expansión, no solamente en el ámbito de programas y servicios sociales (educación, sanidad y asistencia social), sino en un ámbito mucho mayor de las actuaciones públicas, por ejemplo en programas culturales, de incentivos a la creación de empleo, de protección del medio ambiente, de inmigración, de fomento de la industria y el comercio, de desarrollo rural, de mejora de las infraestructuras y las telecomunicaciones, de diversidad lingüística, etc. Pero, en contraposición a lo que se suele pensar, el profesional de la evaluación no sólo necesita conocer un buen puñado de técnicas de investigación social, sino que debe disponer de muchas otras habilidades y conocimientos. De hecho, a lo largo de treinta años de experiencia en evaluación, se han aprendido algunas lecciones importantes que seguramente lo seguirían siendo en el futuro de esta profesión.
